Improving the well-being of all Australians by supporting dental research
Research has the capacity to impact all areas of dentistry, leading to improved delivery of care for patients, reduction of risk factors, and better management of the burden of oral disease for the benefit of individuals, the health system and the economy.
The Australian Dental Research Foundation LTD is registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission [ABN 5496 3830 138].
Research has the capacity to impact on all areas of dentistry
Investing in research leads to improved delivery of care for patients, reduction of risk factors, and better management of the burden of oral disease, for the benefit of individuals, the health system and the economy.
Australian dental researchers have a strong history and reputation in clinical, epidemiological and population oral health research. Dental research in Australia must continue to be advanced and the Australian Dental Research Foundation (ADRF), a joint initiative of the Australian Dental Association and the Australian Dental Industry Association, plays a critical role in funding dental and oral health research in Australia.
Each year donations made to the ADRF allow it to offer a range of grants and scholarships. To date, with the help of its donors, the ADRF has supported over 2,000 research projects conducted by dental students, early and mid-career researchers, and senior researchers within our world class dental schools.
The ADRF is committed to supporting:
– dental research which translates to better patient care and overall community health, particularly where it is needed most, and
– dental innovation on the pathway from laboratory to the marketplace, generating business opportunities, creating jobs and positioning dental research as a significant economic driver.
Grants & Scholarships
Each year we offer funds to support grants based on priority areas advised by the ADRF Research Advisory Committee and approved by the Board. Through the ADRF Research Application Form, individuals can begin the application process and explore potential grant opportunities. The ADRF is committed to fostering excellence in dental research by providing financial support to exceptional projects that hold promise for significant advancements.
Each application undergoes a rigorous evaluation process to ensure that the grants are allocated to projects of the highest quality. This process may include external reviews conducted by renowned experts in the field, who assess the scientific rigor, potential impact, and feasibility of the proposed research. Additionally, the ADRF Research Advisory Committee, comprising esteemed members with extensive experience in dental research, conducts an internal review of the applications.
Moreover, within the pool of selected applications, the ADRF recognizes and honors outstanding projects through ranking them under various categories. These categories highlight specific areas of dental research that have been identified as critical for advancing oral health. We extend our sincere gratitude to the generous Award sponsors who support these exceptional projects, making it possible for groundbreaking research to flourish.
The ADRF has the ability to offer multiple grants including:
- Research Grants
- Reginald and Pamela Hession Award
- Colin Cormie Scholarships
- Trebitsch Award
- Oral Health Promotion - ADA Grant

This organisation was set up to support research in dentistry to improve the oral health of the community.
A focus on forwarding research
Each year donations made to the ADRF allow it to offer a range of grants and scholarships. To date, with the help of its donors, the ADRF has supported over 2,000 research projects conducted by dental students, early and mid-career researchers, and senior researchers within our world class dental schools.
However, the ADRF receives more than double the number of applications than it is able to fund. This year, we distributed over $250,000 to support projects and research dedicated to:
Enhancing the dental health of young children and the nutritional well being of older Australians
Preventing dental caries, dental disease and tooth loss
Eliminating the health risks associated with dentistry
Improving restorative dentistry
Decreasing the anxiety associated with dental treatment
Developing new products that will offer cost effective and aesthetically pleasing dental treatment options
